1. It asks you to install a program or browser extension just to download one video. A web tool should work in the browser.
2. It wants your password or account login for a platform. A real downloader only needs a public link.
3. It asks for payment details for a service that claims to be free.
4. The page has no HTTPS padlock. Your connection is not protected.
5. Many buttons look like Download. Only one belongs to the tool, and the rest are ads.
6. Pop-ups or redirects open new tabs, or tell you that your device is infected.
7. The file has a strange extension, such as .exe, .apk, .bat or .msi, when you asked for a video. A video should end in .mp4, .webm or .mp3.
8. There is no privacy policy, contact page or terms. Trustworthy sites explain who they are and how they treat data.
9. It claims to download anything, from every site, with no limits. Big promises are a common lure.
10. Reviews look fake, or you cannot find any information about the site elsewhere.

How to tell the real Download button from an ad

Free tools are often supported by adverts, so seeing ads is normal. The danger is ads designed to look like the tool's own button.

• The real button appears after you paste a link and press Start, in the same area as the video result.
• Ads are usually labelled, and they sit in separate blocks around the page.
• Hover over a button to see the address in the corner of your browser. If it leads to an unrelated site, do not click.
• If a button starts downloading a file that is not a video or audio file, cancel it and delete the file.

What a trustworthy downloader looks like

• It works in your browser, with no software to install.
• It only asks for a public link, never a password.
• It explains what it can and cannot do, including that private videos are not supported.
• It has clear pages for privacy, terms, copyright and contact.
• It reminds you to download only content you own or have permission to save.

Protect your device and your data

• Keep your browser and your device up to date.
• Use a reputable security app, and let it scan files you are unsure about.
• Never run a downloaded .exe, .apk or installer that pretends to be a video.
• Do not enter passwords, card numbers or personal details on a downloader page.
• Use a private window if you want to keep extensions and cookies out of the way.

If you already clicked something suspicious

1. Close the page, and do not open the downloaded file.
2. Delete the file, and empty the Downloads folder or the recycle bin.
3. Run a full scan with your security software.
4. Remove any extension or program you did not mean to install.
5. If you entered a password, change it, and turn on two-step verification.
