How to Download Your Own Instagram Story and Keep It After 24 Hours
Instagram Stories disappear after 24 hours, and many people only think about saving one when it is almost gone. If you want to download your own Instagram Story, you have several easy options, and the best one depends on whether you want a copy on your phone, a permanent place on your profile, or a file on your computer.

Before you start: what you can and cannot save
Use these methods for Stories that you posted, or for content that the owner has clearly given you permission to keep. Stories belong to the person who created them, and downloading someone else's Story without permission can break copyright and privacy rules.

Method 1: Save a Story with Instagram (the official way)
Instagram gives you a few built-in options. Menu names can change slightly between app versions, but the steps are usually similar.
Save a Story while it is live
- Open your Story from your profile picture.
- Tap the three dots (More) at the bottom right.
- Choose Save, then pick the option to save the video or photo to your device.
Turn on automatic saving
In your account settings, look for the option that saves your Story to your camera roll or gallery. Once it is on, every Story you post also leaves a copy on your phone.
Use your Story Archive
Instagram normally keeps your expired Stories in a private Archive that only you can see. Open your profile menu, choose Archive, then Stories archive. From there you can open an old Story and save it again.
Method 2: Keep it longer with a Highlight
A Highlight keeps a Story on your profile as long as you want. It is the best choice if you want followers to see it again, for example a product launch, a trip or a set of answers to common questions.
- Open the Story or choose it from your Archive.
- Tap Highlight, then create a new Highlight or add it to an existing one.
- Give it a short name and choose a cover image.
A Highlight is not a downloaded file, so keep a saved copy as well if the content is important.

Common problems and fixes
The Story has expired
A Story stays live for 24 hours. After that, use your Archive, if archiving was turned on when you posted.
I cannot find the Save option
Update the Instagram app, then check the three-dot menu on your own Story. Options can look different on Android and iPhone.
The downloader says the link is not available
Use the link of the specific Story, not your profile. If your account is private, the downloader cannot reach it, so use the in-app Save option.
The saved video has no music
Music and stickers added inside Instagram can behave differently in saved files. If music matters, add it in a video editor before you post.
I cannot find the file on my phone
